The story behind our replacement totem pole (2003)

as told by Stella Gerba Gore

(assembled by Paul Frye)

The making of the "new" Wakonda was an idea that Dina Cook, Nick Thacker and I discussed again and again in our late night hours of visiting during Camp reunions, cramming in every precious moment together that we could. I am sure many Lightfoot folks had looked at the old one, saw it getting worse each year and had the same thoughts we did.

According to Dave Ballard, the previous Wakonda was put in the hole in 1963. It proudly served us for forty years as we came and went. Our hope and wish is that this new one will match it or (better yet) exceed it. - S.G.G.

I suppose Dina, Nick and I just discussed it one time extra enough to drive the thought home. I came home after the October reunion in 2002 bound and determined we could do it. Dina Cook got on the phone and the computer and contacted all the "powers that be," and got us the permission and the go-ahead we needed. I mentioned it to my little brother, Robert, and after that, it was on.
